Montezuma
We had a productive and fun filled New Years in Mal Pais. After surfing/lounging all day, we had drinks and went to dinner with our neighbors and their friends and then the party began. After a few drinks, we ventured to the beach where bonfires were lined up and down the beach with groups of people celebrating. We popped a squat at one abandoned fire and had a drink and listened to the music from the nearby club. Before midnight we wanted to head into the club, well into the gates because it was all outside on the beach. An african band was playing and tons of people were partying. At midnight a good display of fireworks went off and the DJ's began. Not that we are big dancers, but it was fun to watch everyone having fun and I may have busted a move myself. :) I guess I attempted to convince Matt it would be a great idea to sleep on the beach under the stars and in the morning I was relieved that he talked me out of that one! I had all of my belongings and I was in a bed! It was great recovering on the beach and sitting in the water all day!
We are now in Montezuma, not too far from Mal Pais. Our neighbors were nice enough to drop us off here today. We are staying in a nicer place and it is so nice to be able to walk around not thinking there are spiders everywhere and not go to the bathroom behind a dark curtain. We are in a little place, right in the jungle and across from the beach. It is full of wildlife. I was laying on the hammock near our door and listening to all the animals run or fly around. A couple monkeys crossed right over me and tons of birds were out. I got a little freaked when the birds turned into bats, so I got the heck outta there! Soon after, we heard this horrible screeching/barking sound that we thought was a dog and we went out to shoo the thing away, but what we found was a poor lil monkey, dead on the ground. He must have fallen when crossing trees and snapped his neck. The sound, we found out later was another monkey, maybe the momma, grieving the monkeys loss. I went and found the lady who works here and showed her so she could dispose of the monkey and hopefully the screeching/barking will stop so we can sleep tonight! I'm so looking forward to clean sheets! Anyways, with wildlife and beaches, I think we're going to like this town. It's super small and at the moment it's a little too busy for us, but as long as there is beach, I'll be fine.
