I started my journey to Asia in May 2003 when I came to South Korea to teach English. Now, almost 2 years later I will begin another journey. This one a little more exciting. I am going to travel SE Asia for about 4 months before I head to Taiwan to teach for another year.

Happy New Year

We´ve been lazing the days away on the beach with Matt attempting to go pro in surfing. Well, he has managed to catch his own waves and stand up for a bit, but he has yet to venture out to the big waves. I actually got over (kinda) my fear of waves and have been catching a few myself...Not standing up of course, but it is just as fun to lay on the board in the waves, at least that´s what I tell myself. Mal Pais has been getting busier and busier for the new year. I can´t believe it´s come up so quick. It makes me sad cuz that means we have only a week left! booo hooo. I could stay here forever, given I had money to burn. But, we´ve been cooking our own breakfasts and lunches in our lil outside kitchenette, so that helps. The local grocery store, Super Ronny is right next store and even comes equipt with its own armed, and I mean like shotgun armed security. It´s a bit scary when a man who looks about 15 opens the door for you with a smile and a shotgun sticking out of his pants. I´m guessing robberies have been increasing in the little surf town. It can get a little seedy with the drugs at night, but nothing we can´t laugh about.

We rented an ATV yesterday and cruised around to a town called Montezuma where we booked a nice, and I mean nice hotel to stay at for a few days after the NY. It will be good to have a clean bed, a bathroom with a door on it and not next to the bed and hopefully no bugs. It was a cute little town and it seemed nice and chill. We were eating some lunch and some monkeys were climbing around in the trees, I´m guessing they were attempting to get at our food. So, we´ll be heading that way on the 2nd, and then to another beach with waves for the last couple of days before we head back to the cold...booooo!

We ventured around more on the ATV until Matt felt nature call and actually was one with nature behind a big tree next to a deserted beach. It was quite funny but I do think he enjoyed it too much cuz all he wants to do is poop outside now...watch out when he´s around your house now...JK! We had the ATV all day, so we drove around the dusty roads with bandanas around our face to protect us from the dust. It looked like we were going to rob a bank or something, or better yet, maybe the Super Ronny! We made it to a long stretch of beach which we were able (i think) to drive on, so we cruised on the beach for a bit, almost got stuck in a river tributary with crocodiles known to visit, swam a bit, and checked out the local scenery. It was a fun day, but we were so dirty from all the dust when we made it back.

Other than that, we are getting tanner and lazier by the day, wishing we had more time here. We are gearing up for a New Years Party on the beach, probably watching a bunch of weirdos dance to the ever famous Electronico music. We have a couple of pretty cool neighbors, so we´ll probably party at our cabinas and make our way to the beach to ring in the new year. Have a great new year and see you in 2009!!
